Rand Paul has been all over the news lately and not in a good way.
After being accused of hating Christians and pulling stunts in college, Paul is back on top of the news feeds; this time because of having to
fire a volunteer.
Tim Profitt was Paul's Bourbon County campaign coordinator, but
he will be know now as the volunteer who stomped on an opposing activist's head.
Profitt and at least one other male roughly handled women MoveOn.org activist Lauren Vale. The men wrestled the women to the ground and pinned her head to the sidewalk with Profitt's foot.
Lauren Valle was attempting to pull a small political act. She had dressed up in an employee's costume, complete with wig, to try to hand Paul a "employee of the month" award from the bogus group RepubliCorp. The stunt was part of the MoveOn.org group to highlight ties between corporate money and the GOP.
Her main goal she said was just for Paul to see her sign.
The men say they did it for
Paul's safety. "The way she went after him it looked like something bad was getting ready to happen," Profitt said.
Lauren Valle thought differently. For
CBSnews she said that things unfolded as follows and make her think the attack was
premeditated:
- Before Rand Paul was even near the men had spotted her and started to circle behind her.
- When Paul's car pulled close they stepped in front of her, in an attempt to block her.
- She stepped off the curb and around the car, to get around them.
- They followed her and abused her.
She had been in town for the past few weeks, and she felt that the men knew she would be there. Profitt said nothing would have happened if the police would have gotten involved. Profitt said to the Washington Post,
"A friend of mine went up to three policeman before Rand got there, and told them about the girl who was standing there with that wig on and that she was getting ready to do something. The policemen looked at him and said that's not our job."
That statement partially contradicts what he had said earlier about only acting after he saw Valle go toward Paul. This statement coincides with Valle's theory that this was a premeditated act.
Profitt also apologized, but not to Valle, " "I'm sorry that it came to that, and I apologize if it appeared overly forceful, but I was concerned about Rand's safety."
Rand Paul's campaign issued a statement about the incident, not naming Profitt in it.
"Whatever the perceived provocation, any level of aggression or violence is deplorable and will not be tolerated by our campaign," the campaign's statement said.
Profitt was fired by the campaign and will be
facing fourth degree assault charges for this incident.
Valle has recovered from the bruises on her shoulder and the slight concussion she received.
